The concept of having a credit union was birthed in the mind of Mr. Leon Leacock who was the then Personnel Manager at Winsure Insurance Company. Winsure, at the time of its existence, had a small credit union supervised by Mr. Leacock. After Winsure went into receivership, Mr. Leacock approached Mr. David Lee-a-Ping, the then President of the Trinidad & Tobago Insurance Institute, to discuss the possibility of having a credit union for the entire insurance industry. This idea was tossed around for some time until the IICU was born on November 3, 1986.

The Insurance Industry Credit Union (IICU), founded on November 3, 1986, by Mr. Leon Leacock emerged from the vision of creating a dedicated credit union for the insurance industry. Since then, we have opened our bond to included persons recommended by a member in good financial standing.
